ME AND BOB MARLEY I thought I might try growing a beard That would be something a little bit different for me These days are dull I'm stuck in a rut Got to find a way to break out of this vicious cycle I'm in I got dead end job with dead end pay I can hear the punching of the clock and I got nothing saved I'm going to hit the open road... me and Bob Marley Duane Allman he'll be there too And Jerry Garcia, Jane's Addiction, Jethro Tull You don't understand don't you understand I'm so confused and I got nowhere to go It's time to leave I need to leave There's nothing left around here for the likes of me I should've claimed my life a long time ago But I was so green and I thought I knew what I didn't know I'm going to hit the open road... me and Bob Marley Jimi Hendrix he'll be there too Along with Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Peter Tosh, Bob Dylan, Carlos Castaneda, Cowboy Junkies, Edie Brickell, Temple of the Dog, 10,000 Maniacs, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Tom Brown Jr., The Samples, and Follow for Now

Rand McNally 03:48
RAND McNALLY The wheels have started turning My heartbeat is getting fast These eyes are wide open And my mind is getting stretched I've seen pictures of Colorado In the pages of magazines Now I'm climbing into the Rockies It's like nothing I've ever seen I'll follow the Rand McNally As it winds me up the mountains And down through valleys Utah and Arizona And California too Lay my body in the Pacific Ocean And I let go let go of you I'll follow the Rand McNally As it dips me in the waters All around me Driving back to Colorado To spend the winter there Park the car in Summit County In the springtime go somewhere else I'll follow the Rand McNally As it takes me through the beauty Of this country

Crazy Life 09:45
CRAZY LIFE I sold my car I needed the dough I worked a lot of jobs While living back with my folks But I'm going back west I've saved up enough I think I'll take the good with the bad Whatever will be will be I know a guy in Rohnert Park Says he'll meet me in Reno In his old VW Bus We'll head over to the coast And follow the shoreline north Seeing new things all around I'm even keeping a journal Ross Friedman would be proud I'll start right where I begin And I'll finish right there at the end I'll be strong and I'll be naive I'm so young And I need to be free to believe there's relief In this crazy life When you follow your instincts You trust in the unknown I got dropped off in Eugene Now I'm completely alone So I discovered this town With my guitar on my back I slept in the cemetery behind campus Where I felt safest when it got dark Took a bus to Cougar Hot Springs To get back to the land for a spell I ran around with no clothes on Just to feel how it felt Oregon you helped me You reassured me that I belong Your summer sunshine it warmed me But now it's time to move on I'll start right where I begin And I'll follow this path to the end I'll be trusting and I'll be naive I'm so young And I need to be free to believe there's some relief In this crazy life My hair is getting longer And my clothes are all worn I got these here two thumbs To help get me down the road Catching rides with kind strangers That I'll never see again Waking up on the side of the road Feeling all zen Thumbing it down to Arizona I heard there's a gathering going on A bunch of rainbow hippies Out in the woods singing songs I found myself in Flagstaff With no money and in a crunch I'm gonna find a job and a warm bed And just stay through the winter months I'll start right where I begin And I'll flutter my way to the end I'll be peaceful and I'll be naive I'm so young And I need to be free to believe there's some kind of relief In this crazy life

New Chapter 05:40
NEW CHAPTER Hanging out at Macy's Coffee Shop By the Beaver Street parking lot Playing my guitar and feeling the sun on my back People walking all around Lots of flannels in lots of shades of brown I met some students they were Lumberjacks Through the kindness of their hearts they asked Do you need somewhere to stay? A place to crash? And for a little bit of time that's just what I did I found a job delivering auto parts And another at one of the local bars I even got my own room at The Hotel Weatherford Here we go a new chapter Keep one foot in front of the other Keep an eye on the weather Keep the pen to the paper And be an open book Tuesday nights at Charley's Bar You could find all the wanna-be's playing guitar It was open mic night and I was always there Trying to be a part of the local scene I had a lot to learn I was oh so green But I connected with a kindred soul and we had songs to share It felt so good just to play along And when it was my turn I'd sing a song And through the power of music I knew I had made a good friend There's a waitress who recently moved here too And she catches my eye across the room Be still my young beating heart I wonder what lies ahead Here we go a new chapter Keep one foot in front of the other Keep an eye on the weather Keep the pen to the paper And be an open book

about

A seasoned and accomplished veteran of recording and performing, Dave Desmelik is a singer/songwriter and instrumentalist based in Brevard, NC USA. With songs raw and unapologetic, There and Then (July 1992 - December 1994) is Desmelik's 17th independent release. It is an extremely personal journey into the trials and tribulations of a young man trying to find his way in the world.

Spencer Jones (music host from WNCW Radio) says of this album....

"Driving around my town of Brevard, listening to Dave Desmelik’s newest album, there is a feeling of familiarity and of coming home. In the quintessential Western North Carolina Americana artist’s new album 'There and Then (July 1992-December 1994)', Dave strikes tones of home from a different time and place – the road. He draws on nostalgic, creative foundations laid on western highways in the early 1990’s. The album as a whole shows a vulnerable artist putting shapes and forms on his creative impulses and examining the foundations of a lifelong passion. The deep, ripping electric guitar by Desmelik (and Steve Mayone on 'Crazy Life') stand out as highlights which underlie the depth of emotion in the words. The banjo work of Bow Thayer in 'Rand McNally' provides welcome sentiments of Appalachia in an album with a Western mindset.

Passages from 'Risking' and 'Crazy Life' feel as if they were taken directly from journals with a reverence for their creation that comes through the lens of self-reflection and time. 'Rand McNally' compliments the album’s theme with an ode to the unintentional itinerary across deserts, cities, and scenes from Arizona to Oregon. It awakens the sense of wide-open spaces fostered by youth and travel. The opener 'Me & Bob Marley' is an open road tune that references the deep dives drivers take with an artist during long haul marathon hours on the highway.

The album emphasizes the impetuous essence of the singer’s psyche and hard scrabble nature of his travels and aspirations to create. Vulnerable to the core, the songs examine a tender and profound creative flash point when keeping the pen on paper was a discipline and changes in scenery were a constant. 'New Chapter', the album’s closer, reveals the resolve to go forward and the spirit of an artist whose steel has been tempered by experience.

I love the nostalgia and genuine vulnerability of this album. It shows a songwriter of great discipline digging into his origins and sharing a chapter that, while looking back, sounds here & now."
